In addition to its’ sea views and woodland walks, Inish Beg Garden near Baltimore boasts a fine walled garden featuring many beautiful and exotic features- not least a Victorian style primula theatre.
The Victorians loved pot plants, and primulas in particular have been showcased since the 1760’s in sheltered showcases called “Auricula Theatres”. The oldest surviving example is at Calke Abbey in Derbyshire, England. Dating from the 1830s, it is a three-sided structure allowing morning sun into the interior, while the roof keeps rain or dew from settling on the plants’ foliage.
The modern day homage to the auricular theatre at Inish Beg gardens is pictured here.
