The Beara Peninsula includes magnificent mountain and coastal views, and the day itinerary includes a tour of the continental Bamboo gardens, the unique sculpture garden at the Ewe Experience, a trip out by boat to Garnish Island to see the romantic Italian style gardens at Ilnacullen , and a trip over the stunning Healy pass to see the magnificent 60 acre Derreen gardens set between mountains, woodlands and sea. From Bantry take the N71 north for 17 kilometres, and in approx 15 minutes you will approach Glengarriff. Look out for Bamboo Park on the left as you come into the town.
To visit Garinish Island, ferries are available every 30 minutes opposite the Eccles Hotel in the bay just beyond Bamboo Park. These will take you to Ilnacullen and back. Details here
Back at the ferry port keep going West on the R572 for Casteltownberehaven. After 30km turn right at Rodeen onto the R574 towards Lauragh, over the Healy Pass. At the bottom of the mountain the other side turn left onto the R 571 and then R573 into Lauragh, and to Derreen gardens. Enjoy the magnificent 60 acres with sea views, woodland walks and classical garden landscaping, and have lunch in the charming new cafe.
The journey back to The Ewe takes in a visit to Kenmare, an attractive tourist town in Kerry. Take the R571 East towards Kenmare – a journey of approx 20 mins (34 km). At Kenmare travel south on the N71 back towards Glengarriff. The Ewe Experience is 26 kilometers (25 mins) on the left a few kilometers before Glengarriff. The Ewe is a unique sculpture garden set in mountain and woodland scenery.
