Having come to live in West Cork 15 years ago, after the first winter in this temperate climate came the realisation of the gardening potential of the area. A ‘throw away’ comment by Charlie Wilkins, gardening journalist ‘To encourage better gardening’ led to a meeting of a small group of gardening enthusiasts in 1993 and resulted in the first trail which took place in the last fortnight of June 1994. Of that original group Charlie Wilkins, Bill Chase of Deelish Garden Centre [are still involved for 18 years]. Garden owners and supporters meet annually in Bantry house, by courtesy of Brigette & Egerton Shelswell-White, to review the current year and plan ahead for the next.
